If Not Art

Just can't be trusted with textures at all. Drop me in a dilapidated army base on a hot and lazy Sunday afternoon, and this is what you get ! A series of iPhone shots depicting details of the state of decline of what was once an army site specialized in intelligence and telecommunication. The textures of lime dripping from old and worn out concrete, the faded colors and the delicacy of flaking paint …

Crazy River

The photographs in this series are all about the scenery along the Rio Tinto in Spain.

We were drawn to the extraordinary patterns and textures created by the continuous natural and historical pollution caused by mining upstream, going back to the Roman era.

Due to this, the water is very acid and has an orange to red tint in the dry season, while the colorful deposits of minerals and metals in mud and on stones give the scenery an otherworldly look that resembles nothing we usually associate with landscapes that we are familiar with.

Transparencities

TRANS

TRANSPARENCY

TRANSPARENCITIES

Transparencities, a series of fourteen - older but never before released - abstract architectural photographs made in New York City and Chicago in 2008 and 2009.

It is about the habitat of the human species in the modern urban environment: the glass, the brick, and the steel typical of the current anthropocene era.

It is about alienation and isolation.

It is about a twisted reality of an urban environment that on the one hand is pretending to be “look through” or transparent, but at the other hand is divided into numerous compartments. As such the reflections and deformations of light and images create a feeling of estrangement and isolation in the modern urban world.

Cypress Swamps

Autumn in the cypress swamps of the Atchafalaya Basin in Texas and Louisiana brings out the most warm colors and soft textures of the leaves of the cypress trees and the Spanish moss. In the quiet of the bayous on a misty morning the reflections in the water of the swamps give a painterly feel to the scenery. All photographs were shot handheld from a floating canoe, which requires a bit of navigational and floating skills. And a lot of patience to proceed slowly, slowly as to avoid the emergence of disturbing ripples on the water surface.

Atchafalaya Autumn as a series was awarded Silver in the Nature Category in the Px3 Prix de la Photographie de Paris aka Paris Photo Awards 2020.

The series also received an Honorable Mention in the 14th Annual Pollux Awards in 2019, Category Landscape.

Snub-Nosed Monkeys
CHN170421-83899.jpg

Alpha male golden snub-nosed monkey - Rhinopithecus roxellana - sits confidently on a rock and observes the surroundings in the  mountainous forests of central China. Their Chinese name is Sichuan golden hair monkey or Sichuan snub-nosed monkey. Of the three species of snub-nosed monkeys in China, the golden snub-nosed monkey is the most widely distributed throughout the country. The males may stay solitary, often remaining away from the rest of the group members as they rest.

CHN170420-82010.jpg

The golden snub-nosed monkey is found in groups ranging in size from 5-10 individuals to bands of about 600. Their social organization can be quite complex. They form large foraging groups that consist of multi-male and multi-female societies.

‘CORMORANT FISHERMAN’ - CHINA 2018

Very happy to announce that one of our China images has won a Silver Medal in the OneEyeland Landscape 2018 competition, in the category ‘Rivers’.

The photograph was made during early morning hours on an overcast day. This fisherman was out on the Li River in the Guilin area in Guangxi Province, south east China. In the old days they used to fish with the help of their trained and captive cormorants. Nowadays? there is not much fish left in the river due to all sorts of reasons: more modern fishing techniques and perhaps also pollution amongst others…

Shoot Magazine Article

In december 2018 our article about “Creativity in Winter” was published in the Belgian photography magazine Shoot.

It is an article spread on eight pages with tips about shooting in snowy and icy circumstances. The article discusses the technical challenges that go with that type of weather, as well as the creative opportunities that arise in this particular season.

Rio Tinto
ESP170209-iPh2105.JPG

The cracked dry soil in the riverbed of the Rio Tinto is very colorful. The river winds all the way down from the mining area through Huelva province until it reaches the Andalusian coast in south of Spain.

The acidic water of the Rio Tinto drains rocks full of sulfide deposits. Its water carries high concentrations of iron and heavy metals, and supports microorganisms that can live in extreme conditions.

When the rains pour down, the water of the Rio Tinto dillutes and the colors fade away in a whirlpool of high rising water, debris and rocks.

The water of the Río Tinto is notable for being very acidic with a pH of 2 and its deep red color is due to iron dissolved in its water.

The land- and waterscapes of the Rio Tinto lend itself very well to experiment and search for abstract nature compositions.

The Unfortunate One

A leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) catches an Adelie penguin in the icy waters off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula near Gourdin Island. Leopard seals - also called sea leopards - are the second largest species of seals in Antarctica. Their latin name "Hydrurga" means "water worker". They patrol the waters near the edges of the ice, almost completely submerged, and wait for a penguin to enter the ocean. The leopard seal then grabs its prey and kills it by shaking the penguin vigorously and beating it against the surface of the water repeatedly.

Adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) can only be found on the Antarctic coast. They are one of the most southernly living of all seabird species. After they were first discovered in 1840, they were named after the wife of a French explorer, hence the name Adelie. Their swimming speed mounts up to an eight km per hour.

New Chick In Town

South Georgia, Salisbury Plain, King penguin chicks (Aptenodytes patagonicus) in profile. During the first thirty to fourty days of their lives the chicks stay in close vicinity to and under the guarding of their parents. After that period, the chicks have grown much bigger, and at that time a king penguin chick can keep itself warm and protect itself against most predators.

They then form a group with other chicks, also called crèches. These penguin crèches are guarded by only a few adult king penguins, while the other birds go out to forage at sea. By that time the chicks become more curious and start to explore their surroundings.

Here on South Georgia, like this one, the chicks of the king penguins are very inquisitive and observant when it comes to visitors.
